Prisoners Who Helped Build a Nation
In the 1950s and 60s, inmates from Chanchalguda contributed their labor and craftsmanship to the construction of the Nagarjuna Sagar Dam — one of independent India's greatest engineering achievements. Working alongside engineers and free laborers, they carried stone, shaped iron, and laid the foundation of a dam that would irrigate millions of acres across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
History rarely acknowledged them. The museum does. Through preserved records, tools, and oral histories, we honor the silent workforce that helped transform a young nation's landscape — men who found purpose and dignity in skilled work even within the walls of confinement.
What We Preserve
Inside the Collection
The museum holds a rich collection of objects, artworks, and relics spanning over a century of the jail's history. Each piece is a window into the daily reality of incarceration — the food, the craft, the punishment, and the unexpected creativity that emerged within these walls.
Prison Food & Diet Scale
The museum displays the original diet scale — a regulated chart dictating the precise daily food allowance for each category of prisoner. Actual cookware, serving vessels, and utensils from the jail kitchen are exhibited alongside, giving visitors a visceral sense of the spartan nourishment that defined prison life for generations.
Prisoner Art & Craft
Among the most moving exhibits is the collection of art created by inmates — paintings, sculptures, woven textiles, and handmade objects. Far from mere decoration, these works reflect inner lives, longings, and the extraordinary human capacity to create beauty even within severe restriction. Many of these handcrafted articles are also available at the in-premises sales counter.
Ancient Jail Implements
Iron shackles, handcuffs, wooden batons, lock mechanisms, and restraint devices dating back to the colonial era are carefully preserved and displayed. These implements trace the history of how justice was enforced — and how its instruments evolved over a century from brute force to a more considered system of correctional care.
Weaving & Tailoring Works
Prisoners at Chanchalguda were trained in tailoring and weaving as part of a skills rehabilitation programme. The museum showcases original looms, spindles, finished garments, and uniforms produced within the facility — objects that speak to the philosophy of reform through productive labor, a tradition that continues in the immersion experience today.
The Gallows
The original gallows structure at Chanchalguda has been preserved in situ as a solemn historical site. A respectful exhibit of records, legal documents, and historical context surrounds it — inviting visitors to reflect on the evolution of capital punishment in India and the ongoing national conversation about justice and human dignity.
Smart Prisons Exhibit
Alongside the historic, the museum presents a forward-looking exhibit on Smart Prisons — showcasing how modern technology, rehabilitation programming, and humane architecture are reshaping correctional facilities in India. A deliberate and thought-provoking contrast to the colonial implements displayed elsewhere in the museum.
